What these numbers mean
Use this result as a planning checkpoint, then verify the inputs and official rules that apply to you.
What these numbers mean
The result compares a simplified square-foot estimate with an allocated actual-expense estimate and flags an entered income limitation.
How they were calculated
The simplified method multiplies eligible office area by the entered rate. The actual method adds direct costs to the business-use share of indirect home costs.
Common mistakes
Do not count nonexclusive space, use total home expenses as direct expenses, exceed the square-foot cap, or assume the larger estimate is automatically allowed.
Important assumptions
Office and home areas, direct costs, indirect costs, the simplified rate, and any limitation are taken exactly as entered.
Why an actual return may differ
Eligibility, carryovers, daycare or inventory exceptions, depreciation, home sales, multiple businesses, and Form 8829 limits may alter the return.
How this estimate works
The simplified estimate multiplies the smaller of office area or your entered limit by the entered rate. The actual estimate adds eligible direct expenses to indirect expenses multiplied by the office-to-home area percentage.
Assumptions
- All rate and limit values are user-entered and require annual verification.
- Direct expenses are treated as fully allocable; indirect expenses are allocated by square footage.
Limitations
Regular and exclusive use, principal-place-of-business rules, income limitations, depreciation, carryovers, daycare rules, and expense classification are not evaluated. A larger estimate is not automatically the permitted choice.
