1099 Taxes for Etsy Sellers

Etsy sellers should reconcile gross order activity to refunds, marketplace fees, shipping, payment processing, and inventory records before estimating profit.

Last reviewed: August 6, 2026

Quick answer

Start with gross business or platform activity, reconcile it to forms and deposits, then separately review supported business costs. A Form 1099 amount or net deposit does not by itself equal taxable business profit.

How income is commonly received

Product sales, shipping charged to buyers, custom-order payments, digital-product receipts, and other marketplace proceeds can appear in order exports and Form 1099-K.

Reconcile gross income before estimating profit

Start with gross orders and reconcile refunds, discounts, Etsy marketplace and advertising fees, payment processing, shipping labels, and deposits. Form 1099-K reports gross payment activity, not taxable profit.

Expenses and mixed-use costs to review

Review materials, packaging, shipping, marketplace fees, advertising, design software, photography, equipment, and inventory or cost-of-goods-sold treatment. Personal crafting remains separate.

Business purpose, substantiation, reimbursement, personal use, timing, inventory, and capitalization can affect treatment. Listing a category here does not establish a deduction.

Recordkeeping that supports the estimate

Retain order exports, 1099-K records, refund and cancellation reports, fee statements, shipping receipts, material purchases, beginning and ending inventory support, and deposit reconciliations.

Common mistake

Subtracting inventory purchases as ordinary supplies without reviewing cost of goods sold, or treating the 1099-K amount as profit, can materially misstate results.

Estimated taxes and reserve planning

Project self-employment tax and federal income tax separately, then account for household withholding, credits, prior payments, and state or local obligations. Update the projection when income or costs change rather than relying on one guaranteed percentage.

Hypothetical recordkeeping example

Hypothetical: A maker reconciles gross Etsy orders to refunds and fees, tracks finished goods and materials separately, and matches shipping-label costs to fulfilled orders.

This example illustrates organization only; it is not a taxpayer result or eligibility conclusion.
