1099 Taxes for eBay Sellers
eBay sellers need to distinguish business inventory sales from personal-item sales and reconcile gross marketplace payments with fees, refunds, shipping, and basis.
Last reviewed: August 6, 2026
Quick answer
Start with gross business or platform activity, reconcile it to forms and deposits, then separately review supported business costs. A Form 1099 amount or net deposit does not by itself equal taxable business profit.
How income is commonly received
Auction and fixed-price sales, shipping collected, promoted-listing adjustments, and other proceeds may appear on marketplace reports and Form 1099-K.
Reconcile gross income before estimating profit
Match gross payment activity to completed sales, canceled orders, refunds, eBay fees, payment processing, shipping labels, and deposits. Personal items sold at a gain or loss require basis records and may not follow the same business treatment.
Expenses and mixed-use costs to review
Business sellers may review inventory basis, packaging, shipping, marketplace fees, promoted listings, photography equipment, storage, and software. Personal acquisition costs need item-level support.
Business purpose, substantiation, reimbursement, personal use, timing, inventory, and capitalization can affect treatment. Listing a category here does not establish a deduction.
Recordkeeping that supports the estimate
Keep order exports, item purchase records, basis evidence, refund reports, fee statements, shipping receipts, inventory counts, and a clear classification between resale inventory and personal property.
Common mistake
Calling every eBay receipt business profit, ignoring original basis, or netting fees and refunds without preserving gross-sale records can create reporting errors.
Estimated taxes and reserve planning
Project self-employment tax and federal income tax separately, then account for household withholding, credits, prior payments, and state or local obligations. Update the projection when income or costs change rather than relying on one guaranteed percentage.
Hypothetical recordkeeping example
Hypothetical: A reseller separates inventory sourced for resale from household items, reconciles Form 1099-K to gross orders, and keeps item-level cost records for both groups.
This example illustrates organization only; it is not a taxpayer result or eligibility conclusion.
